Agriculture has played a distinctive role in Nyamagabe District's culture and history. Through enormous expenditure of human labour, livelihoods have been sustained for ages and generations given rise to others.

Nyamagabe's current agricultural status and orientation for the future entails primarily, the stepping up of activities that develop and promote agricultural and livestock production.

This shall be achieved by means of intensifying the use of inputs and modern techniques in crop production and animal husbandry ; prudent use of land and water ; agricultural commercialization ; and the strengthening of research capacity.

Production of food crops have throughout the period, dominated the agriculture sector in the district. As such, while efforts are underway to reduce dependence on agriculture by consolidating the industry and service sectors, the development of agriculture in general and food crop production in particular continues to be priority. To this end, a limited set of crops has had to be identified, with support from research and extension, as a tool with which to design public actions in support of the agricultural sector.
